A place like something from another world in Sapporo? The allure of Takino Cemetery

The Makomanai Takino cemetery, located within the city limits of Sapporo, attracts attention as a somewhat unusual place.

It may have gained even greater notoriety recently, having served as one of the filming locations for the Bollywood film "ONE DAY", which was released in India.

While the word "cemetery" usually evokes images of quiet peace, this place is quite different. Its expansive grounds feature artfully designed landscapes and unique architecture that attract many visitors. It is even a popular stop for tour buses.

■ A scene with rows of Moai statues, an extraordinary sight

The first thing that catches your eye upon entering the park is the row of moai statues. There are about 30 of them. Why is this landscape, reminiscent of Easter Island in South America, located in Sapporo? It is precisely this contrast that makes the place so fascinating. Especially during the snowy season, the moai statues, which seem to float in the white landscape, are impressive, and the park is enveloped in an almost mystical atmosphere.

■ Magnificent Buddha architectural structures

Another highlight is the "Head Buddha". Designed by the world-famous architect Tadao Ando, this room is not just something to "look at", but an architectural experience.

After passing through a tunnel-like passage, a peaceful and imposing Buddha statue suddenly comes into view. This effect of its sudden appearance is incredibly impressive. In summer, lavender fields stretch across the area, creating a place where time flows peacefully by amidst the gentle fragrance. It is a tourist destination, yet a place of tranquility and peace, where one naturally finds inner peace.

From STAY Moiwayama, you can reach Makomanai Takino Cemetery in about 30 minutes by car. Along the way, you'll find Sapporo Art Park with its numerous artworks. A little further on is the nature-filled Takino Suzuran Hillside Park. Take the opportunity for a sightseeing tour in southern Sapporo!
